Emil from The Hill-side tells us a little about his new collection of ties and handkerchiefs.
 
"I had some deadstock hickory stripe fabric that I found in the basement of a local fabric store and I used it to make myself a simple square-end necktie that looks remarkably similar to the finished product we’re producing today.  I like the square-end, 2" wide necktie because it feels like an un-acknowledged archetype, like something that’s always existed in the background, never changing with trends, never being the coolest tie around but never going out of style either. Of course, the other nice thing about the shape is that it allows us to end the tie with the fabric’s selvedge. 
 
All my friends wanted one, and so I started gathering old fabric: selvedge denim, indigo chambray, colorful striped chambray, 150-year old hand-woven linen, even old used canvas dropcloths.  Just a few months ago, upon making a connection with an incredible textile mill in Kojima, Japan, I moved production to a small factory in New York City, and began work on my first complete collection.
 
Our core values are craft, provenance, and intense attention to detail.  All the pieces are made at a small factory in Manhattan where we meet with the owner face-to-face on a weekly basis.  These ties and handkerchiefs are not delicate or fancy, they are meant to be worn casually, every day, and broken in.  We use utilitarian fabrics not commonly found in neckwear. 
 
The 5oz chambray is very lightweight, it has been washed once, and it will continue to soften as you carry it around. These thin chambrays require us to add lining when we use them for ties.  All the other ties are unlined, but these have a selvedge cotton muslin lining.  The chambray handkerchief is softer than you might imagine and is comparable to the feeling of a standard paisley bandana."
